Producer Responsibility in Driving a Circular Economy

Recorded 5/8/19

The California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) is a nonprofit supporting policies and projects where producers share in the responsibility for managing problem products at their end of life. Many product stewardship programs in California use consumer fee money to fund a producer managed program, where as Extended Producer Responsibility or “EPR” utilizes internalized costs by manufacturers to fund and manage the program.

This webinar will go over the product stewardship and EPR laws in California, such as carpet, mattresses, paint and pharmaceuticals/needles. In September 2018, CPSC helped pass the first-in-the-nation EPR law for both medicine and sharps disposal. As California learns from the successes and challenges with each product stewardship and EPR program, laws are updated and changed regularly. This webinar will go over bills in the legislature directly related to producer responsibility and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each proposed bill.
